As I contemplate entering motherhood at some point in the coming years, and have many many friends in their 30’s with children, I wonder what kind of ‘looking’ mum I will be. Some of the best ‘looks’ I see in magazines and online are celebrity mums on the street. Now of course these women all have nannies and trainers and money, but at the end of the day they still have to do some sort of practical parenting and I like to look at what they are wearing whilst they are doing it.
There’s the ‘highly unattainable I will never look that awesome look’. These women are not only blessed with good looks, money, husbands, stylists etc, but they know how to keep their signature look going. Think Gwen Stefani, Elle Mcpherson and Gwyneth Paltrow. I mean seriously how does Gwen Stefani not only get matching hair to Kingston but also not get red lipstick all over her white clothes?
And even though us mere mortals will never look like this, we can take some tips from how they dress.
But before we get to that; what about the ‘mid range’ mums. Those celebs that tend to look a bit more realistic when they are out and about with their ridiculously good looking children. Think Jessica Alba and Jennifer Garner. Great to see a lady in tracksuit pants and old jeans. Ok so Kate Beckinsale looks a bit more done up here, but I am still totally loving this look.
If I had to pick one mother who just looks fab without looking like she has been styled to the hilt is Sarah Jessica Parker. She is blessed with fabulous style anyway, but this outfit below is to die for.
Ok so what can we learn from what these ladies wear?
- Layering! All of these women have multiple layers. Good for taking off when you get hot doing activities and for disguising your hips and waist area. SJP has this down pat.
- Big dark sunglasses. Hide how tired you are or simply ramp up whatever you are wearing with a big pair of glamorous sunglasses.
- Dark colours for winter. Lots of black layers with scarves and jackets just look cool classy. It doesn't matter if you are wearing a bonds black t shirt, just throw over another thin jumper and a jacket with a scarf and you are on your way to SJP-dom.
- A splash of colour. Whether its Elle's bright yellow top, Kate's bright blue bag or Gwen's lipstick, throw in some colour somewhere, especially in spring and summer.
- Straight cut jeans. I have banged on about these for ages. I know every magazine tells curvy girls to wear boot cut jeans, but I disagree I still think the straight cut jean is the most flattering and smart pair of jeans you can buy. Wear it with long layered tops! Style without too much effort.
And lastly, get involved with some slim fit T-shirts. How much do I love Kate Winslet here for simply looking like the most ordinary mum of the lot. (see - straight cut jeans!)
