Tips for winter dressing

I recently asked a few people what they were interested in seeing on the blog and thank god someone suggested tips on dressing for winter, because a). its utterly freezing in Melbourne at the moment, and b). there are so many gorgeous options (more than in summer) for your wardrobe. So this isn't an exhaustive list but a few things I do when winter ticks around.
Winter dressing, the celeb way!

First of all, seriously don't let go of the maxi dress when winter comes around. I still like to wear mine at the weekend. I recently wrote a post on the maxi dress for winter which you can read HERE. But to give you an idea, here are a few of the mood boards I created to play with.

Secondly fall in love with knits long and short. Short knits help you show off a waist and work great with aline skirts, tights and boots. Long knits are perfect to give you extra warmth to wear with jeans and trousers with a cropped jacket and scarf. This was one of my recent outfits to work. Cosy warm but still stylish.I also wrote a blog post about my love affair with knits which you can read HERE

Get to know a leather skirt. Leather skirts are warm and look stylish with tights and boots. A one of investment should last you years. Here's a look a created recently. I would add a lovely long black pea coat to this to keep warm.

Stock up on a-line midi skirts. Especially in thick and ponte style fabrics. They are incredibly warm and stylish and you can wear them with fitted jumpers and cropped knits with tights and gorgeous shoes. This red skirt is one of my favourite and I've been wearing it with a thick polar neck fitted short jumper.

Buy as many scarves as you can afford! I can't tell you how much these change an outfit. If you are bored of wearing jeans and a top and a jacket keep changing your scarves and change you bag to complement it. I've recently invested in a bright orange scarf from Topshop and two brightly coloured long scarves from Witchery.

Have at least one good long winter coat and one short one. I live in my biker leather jacket and a long wool coat. If you can afford it buy more. I have a trench coat, a bright green long vintage wool coat, and plenty inbetween! This Country road pea coat is simply gorgeous and warm. I would wear this with cords and jeans and plain scarves.

Try out other styles of pants! My sister-in-law Sally and I have gone nuts for these Country Road cords. we both have over 2 pairs in all different colours. Warm and something a bit different.
Don't ditch the maxi skirt. Its long, it can be warm. And as SJP shows us below, it looks banging with a leather jacket! (OK so technically I know this was a dress but you get what I mean!)

Other things I never do without. Smart fingerless gloves from sportsgirl or Mimco, a mix of expensive and cheap sunnies. Lots and lots of beanies. So...get out there and get stylish.
