How to wear a maxi dress in Winter

As we approach the colder weather in the southern hemisphere we slowly have to start letting go of our thongs (flip flops) and casual & colourful dresses. Sometimes it can be hard to put that favourite and comfortable maxi dress to the back of the wardrobe as it seems such a shame to waste it.

My advice? Stop right there, put down the maxi dress, and keep it at the front of the cupboard! That fabulous maxi dress that you own doesn't have to be just for summer. So here are a few ideas to help you on your way. I have had a play on the fantastic website that is Polyvore and put together 4 looks for maxi dresses which should cover a variety of occasions.

1. The totally casual and cool look

I just love this look. Match in some soft tones against your dress and dress it down, but warm. Here I have added a nice grey sweater with a blue scarf to pop the colour. Scarves and maxis were just meant to be. Throw in a cute bobble hat for a bit of warmth matched with some fingerless gloves, and throw on your runners and a pair or ray ban (or ray-ban inspired) sunnies. Perfect for crisp Sunday mornings walking the dog or nipping out to get milk.

2. The dinner look.

Take any brightly coloured or patterned maxi that you own and dress it up for dinner but keep it warm. Pair it with a nice black blazer long or short. Pick a scarf that takes out both colours so here I have mixed the orange and black. Add some heeled boots in black with a wooden heel to keep it modern and add in my favourite style of bag for Autumn - the satchel. This also works with black flat knee high boots. Perfect for work functions & dinner parties.

3. The monochrome look.

I think this is my favourite look.Mainly because grey is my favourite colour at the moment. Take a striped, or black or white maxi and give it the London look. Get a great biker leather jacket and a stunning grey pashmina styled scarf. Add in some grey boots OR fabulous biker boots that are in stores at the moment. Then contrast your bag with a splash of red. Add in some big black sunnies and a black beanie too if you are cold enough. Perfect for Sunday or Saturday afternoon sessions at the pub!

4. The Sunday lunch look

Have a look at your maxis that have any golden or beige tones and make them warm and sumptuous for a Sunday lunch! Here I have added a wool beige cardigan with a belt. I think the belt is really important to keep your shape at the waist. Again a darker scarf which I would wear long but don't cover your waist too much. Add in some leather gloves and some great beige/tan/brown knee high boots and tights if you need them. Maybe a pair of brown sunglasses if you need them and a satchel. Perfect for Sunday lunch, work, shopping and the cinema! This would also work with a V neck jumper and a belt instead of a cardigan.

So my top rules for the winter maxi dress love!
1. Use winter accessories like scarves.
2. Don't be afraid to wear hats and gloves!
3. Keep your waist with jackets and cardigans that flatter you around the middle.
4. Mix patterns with block colours.
5. Use all styles of boots and avoid regular heels as they look tacky.
